Nepal Airlines officially resumed operations on the Kathmandu - Lukla route on 6 October 2018, using the Harbin Y-12E aircraft imported from China for the first time to transport two groups of passengers to the Lukla airport on the southern slope of Mount Everest.

Nepal Airlines spokesman Ashok told Xinhua News Agency, "We have obtained the flight approval from the Civil Aviation Authority. Today we use two Y-12E aircraft to and from Kathmandu and Lukla, one for scheduled flights and the other for charter flights. ”

Ashok said that Lukla is only the first destination. Nepal Airlines plans to use Chinese-made aircraft to fly to more remote places, including Zum Som, Gumla, Simicot, Tarcia and other places in Nepal.

Located at 2,800 metres above sea level, Lukla Airport is located in Soru Kumbu County in the eastern part of Nepal. It is the closest airport to the base camp on the southern slope of Mount Everest and is also recognized as the most dangerous airport of the world.

Nepal Airlines is the state-owned national flag carrier of Nepal. It currently has nine small aircraft for domestic routes, six of which are from China, including four Harbin Y-12E and two new Xian MA-60 aircraft.
