The wind blows and the rain falls smoothly

Cordially welcoming passengers from afar

Air India and Air India Express now owned by Tata Group

On 27 January 2022 (Thursday), Air India and Air India Express are formally taken over by Tata Group.

Air India's regional subsidiary Alliance Air is not part of the deal while Tata has an equal stake in a ground handling venture with Singaporean ground handling company SATS Ltd.

Tata, which was approved to buy Air India after offering $2.4 billion, faces an uphill task to revive Air India that has not earned any money after its merger with Indian Airlines in 2007.

The group also runs Vistara and AirAsia India and is criticized for not running these businesses efficiently even though they contribute a tiny portion to the group's overall revenue.

With the acquisition of Air India and Air India Express, Tata Group has access to Air India's fleet of 117 wide-body and narrow-body aircraft and 24 narrow-body jets of Air India Express. Besides, it will get control of 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing and parking slots at India's domestic airports.

Tata Group does not have their own airline under the name of Tata. However, the Aircraft Act of India empowers the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to allow Tata Group to operate the airlines in an interim period till they decide what form their aviation subsidiaries finally will look like, either a merger of low-cost airlines AirAsia India and Air India Express or the merger of full-service carriers Air India and Vistara.
