The success story of Amakusa Airlines despite owning one ATR 42 only

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan
                 / KUCINTA SETIA

The city of Amakusa in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan has the regional airline with only one aircraft worth 649 million yen (6.5 million US Dollars) in assets but it has achieved a net profit of 55 million yen (estimated 754,000 Singapore Dollars) in 2018. This airline is Amakusa Airlines, one of the smallest regional airlines in the world.

Amakusa Airlines began operations in 2000. Among the company's shareholders, the Kumamoto Prefecture government accounts a 53.31 per cent stake in the airline while Aoba City in Kumamoto Prefecture has a stake of 26.85 per cent in the veritable “local state-owned enterprise”.

Amakusa Airlines has only 58 employees as of 30 July 2019. Operating a regional aircraft for almost 20 years with the safe record,  their sales have reaped the net profit of 754,000 Singapore Dollars. It is not easy to achieve such results.

In the early days of the airline's operations, because Kyushu Electric Power was building the new power plant in Amakusa, there were transportation needs for the construction of the project. Amakusa Airlines' Fukuoka to Amakusa route operated by its DASH8-1000 aircraft carried more than 67,000 passengers and had a good 80 per cent load rate. However, after the completion of the project in 2003, the population of Amakusa was only 84,000. The passenger air traffic capacity was reduced, and the full load rate was only 60 per cent. It is difficult to obtain new finances from banks by 2007, and it needs to be subsidized by local governments.

In 2009, Oshima, the former director of the JAL Aircraft Maintenance Plant, took over as the general manager of the company. He proposed a number of reform measures. In order to unite the employees' efforts, each month once, the company's employees will clean the aircraft before the first flight. After the reform, the company had achieved profit.

Although there are only three routes and the aircraft is small, Amakusa Airlines is able to maintain a stable passenger capacity by relying on this kind of centripetal force and the perseverance of the local tourism industry.

There are five flight attendants among Amakusa Airlines' 58 employees. Due to the small number of employees, the flight attendants also need to work part-time in the cabin of the aircraft. The management  staff will support the ground work operations before and during the flight. The general manager will even personally assist in luggage transfers to the carousels.

In February 2016, the DASH8-100 aircraft operated by Amakusa Airlines was replaced by the ATR 42-600. The ATR 42 is similar in size to the DASH8 but the number of seats after the ATR was changed from 39 to 48. The "large" capacity has increased and the cruising speed of the aircraft has increased by 10 per cent. At present, the one-way fare for the short-haul route from Amakusa to Fukuoka is 11,200 Yen, which is about 141 Singapore Dollars.

The relationship between Amakusa Airlines' sole ATR 42 and Chinese technology is very close. China's Xifei is the sole supplier of the wing box and rear fuselage section of the ATR 42.

Amakusa Airlines pays special attention to communication and pr
omotion with customers. For example, the painting and naming of the aircraft is the result of fully seeking the opinions of the passengers. The company even has a range of cultural and creative products for sale at Amakusa airport and onboard.

The weekly inflight bulletin issued onboard by Amakusa Airlines has been promoting the local tourism industry.

In June 2010, the TV presenter who served as a director of Amakusa Airlines suggested to the company to set up a Facebook page. Unlike the general airlines that operate social media by the public relations department, many of the usual work and activity notes in the company are freely written and posted on Facebook by employees across all departments.

Amakusa Airlines also publishes weekly reports, which focus on sightseeing spots around the recommended routes and questions and answers about interaction with passengers.

It can be seen that although the Amakusa Airlines team is small, it stands close to the heart of the customer. Devotion is the benchmark of the flight operations. The airline can continue to earn profits to achieve long-term development and give great encouragement to the start-up carriers in the aviation industry.

Amakusa Airlines flies daily from Amakusa to Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Osaka Itami.

South Korean airlines suspend flights to Japan due to worsening bilateral relations

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan
                  / KUCINTA SETIA

According to Japan's Kyodo News Agency on 29 July 2019, there are many flights between the smaller airports of Japan and South Korea that were forced to ground. In addition, due to the slowdown in the Korean economy, the number of South Korean visitors to Japan have reduced drastically.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan said that in the summer 2019 flight schedules, 26 regular routes from 18 local airports (excluding the seven major airports of New Chitose, Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka and Naha) are originally mainly from South Korea.

However, South Korea's low-cost airline T'way Air has decided to stop the Saga - Daegu route at the end of May 2019, and will suspend flights on a total of five routes from Busan, Incheon to Saga, Kumamoto and Oita in mid-September 2019.

Image courtesy : Park Hyeon Jae

A spokesperson of T'way Air stated that the reason for the suspension of the flight to Kumamoto is due to “the deterioration of South Korea-Japan relations that led to the expansion of the trend of canceling visits to Japan and the problem will be long-term”.

Korea Express Air has partially suspended flights between Seoul Gimpo and Izumo Airport in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. A spokesperson of Korea Express Air said "if the current situation continues, the impact on the summer holiday season will be great."

According to estimates by the Japan Government, the number of South Koreans visiting Japan from January to June this year was 3.86 million. The data during the first half of the year was reduced for the first time in five years. Because the low-cost airlines frequently adjusted routes according to demand, local routes with fewer fixed business travelers are particularly vulnerable. The person in charge of the Aviation Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of International Affairs said that “there is no way to do it under the current situation”.

In addition, the Busan City Government announced on 28 July 2019 that it will suspend administrative exchanges with Japan until the worsening relationship between Japan and South Korea is improved. Official visits to Japan will also be restricted.

According to a Reuters report on 29 July 2019, a Korean Air spokesperson said that the company will suspend flights between Busan and Sapporo as a result of the decline in demand due to diplomatic disputes between Japan and South Korea.

The spokesperson said Korean Air is also considering reducing the number of flights between the two countries in mid-August 2019 or switching to smaller aircraft.

Capital Airlines launches Beijing - Xi'an - Lisbon flights on 30 August 2019

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan
                  / KUCINTA SETIA

On 22 July 2019, Capital Airlines and Xi'an Xianyang International Airport Co Ltd held a media and market promotion conference in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, announcing Capital Airlines' plans to launch Beijing - Xi'an -Lisbon flights on 30 August 2019.

On 30 August 2019, Capital Airlines flight JD429 departs from Beijing Capital for Lisbon via Xi'an Xianyang at 6.30 am, transits in Xi'an Xianyang at 8.55 am before leaving Xianyang for Lisbon at 12.10 pm and touching down in Lisbon at 7.05 pm local time on the same day.

At 10.55 pm on 30 August 2019, flight JD430 takes off from Lisbon for Xi'an, touches down in Xi'an Xianyang at 6.15 pm on 31 August 2019 before leaving Xianyang for Beijing Capital at 10.15 pm and arriving in Beijing at 12.20 am on 1 September 2019.

Capital Airlines' flights to Lisbon via Xi'an are operated by its Airbus A330 aircraft. Flights to Lisbon take place on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays.

According to Capital Airlines at the conference, the Beijing - Xi'an - Lisbon is the only long-haul route to Portugal from China. It replaces the Lisbon - Macau route that was cancelled by TAP Air Portugal many years ago due to insufficient passenger numbers.

Capital Airlines has flights from Beijing to Macau but it did not extend the flights from Macau to Lisbon. Industry observers however said that the Macau to Lisbon via Beijing route will have higher volume of passenger traffic than the Beijing - Xi'an - Lisbon although the latter route reduces flight duration between Portugal and China.

With the addition of the Beijing - Xi'an - Lisbon route, Capital Airlines is adding more flight capacity to Xi'an from Beijing, currently a domestic route served by its Airbus A319/A320 aircraft.

From 30 September 2019, Capital Airlines will move its Beijing international flight operations from Beijing Capital to Beijing Daxing. Currently, Capital Airlines operates international flights from Beijing Capital to Macau and Male, from Chengdu to Madrid, from Qingdao to London, Moscow, Sydney and Melbourne and from Hangzhou to Osaka Kansai, Naha, Shizuoka and Cam Ranh, as well as domestic flights to 41 China cities with a fleet of 89 aircraft including 21 A319-100, 33 A320-200, 5 A320neo, 19 A321-200, 7 A330-200 and 4 A330-300 jets.
