On 30 June 2026 local time, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced an order for up to 40 Airbus A330 Family wide-body aircraft, the largest investment in the company's history. The order covers the A330-900 model from the A330neo family and the A330-300 model from the A330ceo family.
Based on list prices, the total value of the aircraft in this order exceeds $10 billion.
Of course, considering that airlines typically obtain significant discounts, especially in bulk purchases, the final price that SAS will actually pay is expected to be much lower than this figure. Even so, this large transaction demonstrates SAS's full commitment to advancing its next stage of development strategy.
SAS confirmed its commitment to introducing up to 40 Airbus wide-body twin-engine aircraft to its fleet. The company explained that the A330-900 is the main component of the order, including 18 firm orders and 10 optional orders, with an additional 12 A330-300 orders.
Following its order of Embraer E195-E2 regional jets in 2025 and investment in updating its Airbus A320neo fleet for short-haul operations, this latest order reflects the airline's expansion intentions on long-haul routes.
SAS stated that the order will "support the continued development of Scandinavian Airlines' long-haul network and enhance its ability to connect Scandinavia with major international markets."
According to aviation data platform ch-aviation, SAS currently operates eight A330-300s with an average age of 14.9 years.
Founded in 1946, SAS celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2026, and this large aircraft order signifies that it is celebrating this milestone in a grand manner.
