According to Gulnar Naghiyeva, General Director of Earth Travel Agency, a member of ITB Asia first-time tourism body exhibitor Azerbaijan Tourism Association (AZTA), AZTA signed a Memorandum Of Cooperation with the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) in Kuala Lumpur on 15 October 2018, paving way for Azerbaijan Airlines to start passenger flights from Baku to Kuala Lumpur as early as March 2019.

Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft may be chartered by specific travel agents in Malaysia for group tour flights to Kuala Lumpur besides operating weekly scheduled flights.

The MOU document was signed by Nahid Baghirov, the Chairman of the Board of AZTA, and Deputy Chairman of MATTA, Akil Yusof.

A delegation of AZTA including officials of Azerbaijan Airlines and Azerbaijani travel agencies, representatives of the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB), officials of MATTA, representatives of Malaysian travel agencies, media and the Azerbaijani Embassy to Malaysia attended the signing ceremony before the AZTA members proceeded on their trip to ITB Asia 2018.

Azerbaijan Airlines' plan to launch flight to Kuala Lumpur and collaboration of travel agencies of both countries will boost mutual tourism exchange and contribute to the development of economic relations between Azerbaijan and Malaysia.

Azerbaijan Airlines has its own regional GSA office in Kuala Lumpur while its cargo subsidiary Silk Way Airlines operates flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore from Baku. Existing passenger flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to Baku are conducted via connecting flights from Tashkent by Uzbekistan Airways.

According to tourism figures, 1035 Azerbaijani tourists visit Malaysia in 2017 via Tashkent, an increment of 12.1 per cent in comparison with 2016. The growth trend continues in 2018 with an increase of 18.8 per cent in arrivals from January to April 2018, bringing the total number of Azerbaijani tourist arrivals to Malaysia to 448 during this period.

AZTA distributing Baku shopping tour and Azerbaijan tourism brochures at ITB Asia 2018 is not the only first-time tourism exhibitor. The travel mart also witnesses the presence of first-time tourism body exhibitors from Turkmenistan, Slovakia, Ukraine and Bosnia & Herzegovina while Kazakhstan Tourism has doubled its exhibition space at ITB Asia.

ITB Asia 2018 closed its doors at 6 pm on 19 October. Readers may contact Earth Travel Agency at info@earthtravel.az or gulnar.n@earthtravel.az to gather more information on Azerbaijan transportation, tourism and tour packages.
