On 19 September 2018, the Central and Southern Regional Administration of CAAC issued the license for the use of Xinyang Minggang Airport as the latest domestic airport of China after test flights have proven the airport's eligibility to handle regular flights. It will be officially opened on 28 October 2018 to commercial flights from the first batch of 11 domestic cities including Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Qingdao, Kunming, Beijing, Foshan, Guangzhou, Harbin and Haikou. Loongair's commercial flight from Harbin will be the first to land at the airport on 28 October.

International destinations to be added at a later stage include Hong Kong and Macau.

Xinyang Minggang Airport is located in the territory of Henan Province, at the junction of Xinyang Minggang and Zhumadian Mountain. The east side is the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, and the west side is the 107 National Road and the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. It is 6 kilometres away from Minggang Township, 45 kilometres away from the city centre of Xinyang and 48 kilometres away from the central city of Zhumadian. An airport bus service will link the airport with the city of Xinyang.

Xinyang Minggang Airport was built in 1958 as a first-class permanent air reserve airport, which was basically abandoned. On 30 September 2011, the joint military and civilian project of Mingang Airport was approved by the State Council and the Central Military Commission. At 9 am of 11 November 2015, Xinyang Minggang Airport officially started construction.
