New international airline likely to replace Alitalia in 2021

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

On 9 October 2020, Italy time, the ministers of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy signed a decree on the establishment of a new company for air transport.

Minister of Finance Guardieri said that the establishment of the new company is only the first step, and the ultimate goal is to build an internationally competitive air transport company. To this end, the company’s management will formulate and implement a sound and sustainable business plan to revitalize the Italian air transport industry.

According to local media reports, the new airline will replace the original Alitalia, initially with about 90 aircraft and 6,500 employees, mainly flying international long-range routes. At present, the relevant procedures must be approved by the Italian Parliament and the European Commission. If everything goes well, it is expected to be officially put into operation in early 2021.

In May 2017, Alitalia entered the bankruptcy protection procedure and was taken over by the government. The subsequent reorganization attempts failed. In May 2020, the Italian government promulgated the "Renaissance Act", which plans to invest 3 billion Euros to establish a new company fully controlled by the Ministry of Finance to operate air transportation.
