On 13 September 2018, staff disinfected a Korean Air passenger plane that arrived in Incheon from Dubai at the Korean Air Incheon hangar to prevent the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). In early September this year, a Korean citizen returning from the Middle East was diagnosed with MERS.

The 61-year-old Korean male citizen had entered South Korea from Kuwait after entering the United Arab Emirates. He had symptoms of fever, cough, etc. He was diagnosed with MERS and was treated with isolation after going to the hospital. The 21 related contacts were also isolated, including flight attendants, passengers, relevant medical personnel and immigration staff.

On 9 September 2018, the South Korean health department raised the warning level of the epidemic, from the lowest fourth level to the third level, while looking for about 50 foreigners who had contact with the patient.

This is the second time in South Korea that MERS epidemic occurred here three years later. In May 2015, the first case of MERS emerged in South Korea. In just three weeks, the epidemic spread rapidly in South Korea. The epidemic lasted for 7 months, causing 187 infections, 38 deaths and nearly 17,000 people were isolated. Society was in chaos, and the economy was hit.

However, according to expert analysis, the outbreak of MERS in South Korea may not develop as it spreads in 2015.

It is reported that the incubation period of MERS is 2 to 14 days. According to the Yonhap News Agency, patients have symptoms that are contagious one day before.

On 10 September 2018, Incheon International Airport staff conducted disinfection and epidemic prevention at the Immigration Department of Terminal 2.

Passengers travelling to Incheon and other airports of South Korea from Hong Kong, Singapore and other cities should be aware of the current MERS situation in this country before proceeding with their travel plans.

Bring facial or surgical masks to South Korea while travelling or on business trips just in case.
