Air Mauritius and Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) exhibit at JATA Tourism Expo in Odaiba, Tokyo for the first time on 20 to 23 September 2018. They will also exhibit together at ITB Asia 2018 on 17 to 19 October 2018 for the first time in Singapore.

According to Roselyne Hauchler, Tourism Promotion Officer of MTPA, many Japanese tourists fly to Port Louis via Hong Kong and Singapore. There are no direct and indirect scheduled flights of Air Mauritius to Tokyo. This situation appears to be able to reverse if Air Mauritius decided to proceed with its plans to launch scheduled flight to either Narita or Haneda airports from Port Louis via either Hong Kong or Singapore in 2019. The airline is discussing with the relevant parties and evaluating possibility of launching flight to Tokyo in 2019.

There is a higher possibility of launching the flight to Tokyo via Hong Kong than Singapore as Air Mauritius has non-stop flights to Hong Kong. Tokyo is 3 to 4 hours 30 minutes by a non-stop flight from Hong Kong. Air Mauritius can utilize its A350-900 to launch flight to Tokyo via Hong Kong.

The Singapore regional office of Air Mauritius for Southeast Asia oversees onward flights to Port Louis, Kuala Lumpur and Suvarnabhumi.

Between January and December 2017, 2315 passengers arriving in Port Louis are Japanese nationals. Between January and August 2018, there are already 1304 passengers who are citizens of Japan although there is a decrease in group tour arrivals, a 15.3 per cent decrease from the previous period.

In contrast, there are 3220 passengers departing from Singapore to Port Louis by Air Mauritius aircraft between January and December 2017, a 13.7 per cent increase from 2016.  Between January and August 2018, there are 1685 Singaporean passengers arriivng in Port Louis. During the month of August 2018, there is an increase of 3.5 per cent in Singaporean arrivals compared from 2017.
