According to AirlineGeeks, World Airline News, bne Intelli News and Albanian media, Albania's newest national airline Air Albania receives its first Airbus A319, leased from Turkish Airlines, on 14 September 2018. It was welcome in a ceremony held at Nene Tereza International Airport of Tirana. The new aircraft registered TC-JLR is affectionately named "Lasgushi" after the deceased Albanian poet Lasgush Poradeci.
The A319 begins its test fight from Tirana to Istanbul on 15 September 2018 and returns to Tirana from Istanbul carrying 80 students on 16 September 2018 thus completing its return flight to Istanbul. Regular scheduled flights to Istanbul, Pristina, and subject to bilateral approval, to Rome, Milan and London will follow gradually by October 2018. It plans to launch flights to Athens, Munich and Barcelona from Tirana in October 2018.
Air Albania has plan to launch its first long-haul route from Tirana to New York in the future using Turkish Airlines' long-range aircraft.
As the brain-child of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Air Albania is a joint-venture of Turkish Airlines, the Albanian state-owned civil aviation authority Albcontrol and private MDN Investment SPHK. Turkish Airlines has a stake of 49 per cent in the Albanian airline. The remaining stakes of 41 per cent and 10 per cent are taken up by MDN Investment SPHK and Albcontrol. It was set up in November 2017 with a capital of 30 million US Dollars.
