As of 30 April 2019, AirAsia has 100 A321neo and 232 A320 aircraft, and holds 270 Airbus aircraft orders.

AirAsia is negotiating with Airbus to purchase the ultra-long-range A321XLR aircraft. It is one of the potential customers that Airbus is negotiating with for the A321XLR.

AirAsia's long-haul subsidiary AirAsia X has ordered 66 A330neo aircraft, and announced at the end of 2018 that it would consider increasing the order volume to 100. However, there are reports that AirAsia is considering converting some orders to the A321XLR aircraft.

According to industry insiders, Airbus plans to get at least 200 aircraft orders to start the A321XLR aircraft project.

The first airline customer of the A321XLR may be officially announced at this year's Paris Air Show.

The A321XLR aircraft is expected to be operate its first test flight by the end of 2023.
