According to the 31 May 2019 edition of The Cairns Post, Air Niugini has shown keen interest in launching the non-stop Cairns - Hong Kong route anytime after June 2019.

Alan Milne, the Managing Director of Air Niugini, told The Cairns Post that the Papua New Guinea national flag carrier's B767 can be re-directed to Cairns to deliver agricultural and fish exports to Hong Kong. It also can meet Cairns' demand for continuous passenger air traffic from Cairns to Hong Kong.

Air Niugini is bidding for the Cairns - Hong Kong route.

Currently, passengers from Cairns have the choice to transit in Port Moresby or Singapore for the onward flights to Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific is suspending its Hong Kong - Cairns service later this year. The last Cairns - Hong Kong flight of Cathay Pacific is on 27 October 2019.

Ref. Cairns Cathay Pacfic route could be taken up by Air Niugini, by Alice Nally, The Cairns Post, 31 May 2019.
