On 6 May 2019, South African Airways announced that it is launching thrice-weekly non-stop scheduled flight to Guangzhou from Johannesburg on 18 September 2019 using its Airbus A340-300 aircraft. The inaugural flight will arrive in Guangzhou on 19 September 2019.
On 18 September 2019, South African flight SA288 departs from Johannesburg for Hong Kong at 7.25 pm, arrives in Guangzhou at 3.05 pm on 19 September 2019 before leaving Guangzhou for Johannesburg at 10.15 pm and touching down in Johannesburg at 5.30 am local time under flight SA289.
According to South African Airways, SA288 departs for Guangzhou on Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays while SA289 leaves Guangzhou for Johannesburg on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays.
The Johannesburg - Guangzhou flight will provide travelers a cheaper option to reach South Africa from the Pearl River Delta Region other than the existing Johannesburg - Hong Kong flight link of South African Airways and Cathay Pacific.
