Passengers in the future can skip Hanoi and fly direct to the nearest gateway of Halong Bay as the bay's nearest international airport Van Don is now open to international flights. The first international flight to Van Don operated by Donghai Airlines' B737-800 aircraft is launched on 27 May 2019 from Shenzhen.
On 27 May 2019, Donghai Airlines flight DZ6249 departs from Shenzhen for Van Don at 12.05 am, touches down in Van Don at 2.30 am before leaving Van Don for Shenzhen at 4 am and arriving in Shenzhen at 6.45 am under flight DZ6250. These flights are valid until 10 June 2019 on Mondays.
Beginning 18 June 2019, the flights DZ6249/DZ6250 operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the same timings.
Van Don is located 50 metres away from Halong Bay. Passengers can choose to fly onward internally from Van Don to Ho Chi Minh City in order to connect to outbound international flights.
