According to Skift, the Indian government has approved the resumption of operations of regional airline TruJet (formerly known as Turbo Megha Airlines). Unlike before, this time TruJet will operate as a national scheduled flight operator.
TruJet plans to resume flight services using Airbus A320 aircraft and use Visakhapatnam Airport as its main hub. The airline's previous hub was in Hyderabad. It plans to launch its first flight by November 2025, connecting Visakhapatnam with one of the following cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad.
The decision was made after extensive discussions between officials from the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation and TruJet's leadership. TruJet originally started operations as a regional airline in 2015, but ceased operations in 2022 due to financial difficulties caused by the epidemic.
At the time of the suspension, TruJet mainly served small cities in southern India and had planned to expand to 18 second-tier cities in the region.
In February, Indian aviation company WinAir announced it would acquire a 79% stake in TruJet for 2 billion Indian rupees ($23 million). After acquiring a controlling stake, WinAir said it would take over the management and operations of the company.
TruJet's plan: TruJet has now been approved to operate as a national airline, a significant upgrade from its previous regional airline status. Before resuming operations, TruJet will also need to re-obtain an aviation operating license from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
