Air Niugini launches charter flight from Port Moresby to Guangzhou on 12 April 2025. This is followed by another charter flight on 27 June 2025.

According to FlightRadar24, Air Niugini's B767-300ER flight PX6008 departs from Port Moresby for Guangzhou on 12 April 2025 at 10.16 pm local time and touches down in Guangzhou at 2.52 am on 13 April 2025.

On 27 June 2025, flight PX6008 leaves for Guangzhou from Port Moresby at 9.29 pm and lands in Guangzhou at 2.36 am on 28 June 2025.

Flight details on Air Niugini's flight from Guangzhou to Port Moresby are not available.

Air Niugini has not stated how many more charter flights it plans to operate to Guangzhou before it turns the flight scheduled. Currently, the airline runs regular scheduled flights to neighbouring Hong Kong in China. China Southern also operates weekly scheduled flight from Guangzhou to Port Moresby and from Port Moresby to Port Vila.

According to the Post Courier and a related Facebook post, Air Niugini welcomes competition from China Southern on the latter's recent launch of the Guangzhou-Port Moresby-Port Vila service, describing it as a positive development for regional connectivity and economic integration.

Air Niugini CEO Gary Seddon said that the airline embraces healthy competition and is committed to working with global and regional partners to expand air services in a way that supports the sustainable growth of Papua New Guinea’s aviation sector.

He said, “I’m in favour of cooperation, not against competition,” Seddon said. “I want to see Air Niugini grow in its capacity to deliver safe, reliable, and expanded services across PNG and the broader region.”

While the current Air Services Agreement between Papua New Guinea and China restricts China Southern from selling fares on the Port Moresby–Port Vila route sector, Air Niugini remains open to discussing a potential codeshare arrangement with China Southern.

Air Niugini itself has operated services into Hong Kong and China via codeshare with Cathay Pacific.

Seddon reiterates that Air Niugini will continue working closely with the government, regulatory agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure a safe, competitive, and growing aviation environment.

This statement follows remarks by NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop, who hailed the China Southern Airlines'  route as a “strategic moment” for Port Moresby, aligning with the city’s goal of becoming a regional tourism and transit hub.

China Southern first launches flight to Port Vila via Port Moresby from Guangzhou on 29 April 2025.
