According to Russian Tourism News, Russia's Nordwind Airlines operated by Ikar recently submitted an application to the Russian Federal Aviation Agency to operate a Moscow-Pyongyang route with two flights per week.

If approved, the route will re-establish a direct air link between the two capitals, which currently lack regular commercial flights. Currently, travelers traveling between Russia and North Korea must rely on alternative and less direct modes of transportation, such as charter flights or land routes through China.

The move reflects the trend of increasing recovery of travel links between Russia and North Korea. In early June, direct train services between Pyongyang and Moscow and Khabarovsk resumed. These railway lines were suspended during the covid outbreak in 2020. In particular, the Pyongyang-Moscow railway line is now once again the world's longest direct passenger train route, covering more than 10,000 kilometers and taking eight days.

The potential launch of commercial flights comes at a time when tourism activities in North Korea are recovering on a larger scale.

Nordwind Airlines, a Russian airline known for its charter and scheduled services in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and operated by Ikar, has not yet announced the launch date or aircraft type of its Pyongyang route. The flights will depart from Moscow and may be based at Sheremetyevo International Airport, and the final details will depend on the approval of aviation authorities.
