EL AL Israel Airlines plans to launch thrice-weekly non-stop flights from Tel Aviv to Melbourne with its 787-9 Dreamliner by June 2024. The airline has signed the Letter Of Intention (LOI) with the Victorian government to provide 44,000 annual seats on thrice-weekly flights.

The direct route takes 15 hours of flight over Saudi airspace and the Indian Ocean.

EL AL CEO Dina Ben Tal Ganancia says the airline plans to position Melbourne as Israel's gateway to Australia in order to strengthen bilateral business connections and create jobs locally.

Israel is also an important market for Australia's international education sector, with 45 percent of Israeli students in Australia enrolled in Victorian institutions in 2019.

Currently, Jews and tourists have to transit in Suvarnabhumi or Hong Kong for their EL AL flights to Tel Aviv from Australia.
