According to Japan's Kyodo News Agency on 29 July 2019, there are many flights between the smaller airports of Japan and South Korea that were forced to ground. In addition, due to the slowdown in the Korean economy, the number of South Korean visitors to Japan have reduced drastically.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan said that in the summer 2019 flight schedules, 26 regular routes from 18 local airports (excluding the seven major airports of New Chitose, Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka and Naha) are originally mainly from South Korea.

However, South Korea's low-cost airline T'way Air has decided to stop the Saga - Daegu route at the end of May 2019, and will suspend flights on a total of five routes from Busan, Incheon to Saga, Kumamoto and Oita in mid-September 2019.

A spokesperson of T'way Air stated that the reason for the suspension of the flight to Kumamoto is due to “the deterioration of South Korea-Japan relations that led to the expansion of the trend of canceling visits to Japan and the problem will be long-term”.

Korea Express Air has partially suspended flights between Seoul Gimpo and Izumo Airport in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. A spokesperson of Korea Express Air said "if the current situation continues, the impact on the summer holiday season will be great."

According to estimates by the Japan Government, the number of South Koreans visiting Japan from January to June this year was 3.86 million. The data during the first half of the year was reduced for the first time in five years. Because the low-cost airlines frequently adjusted routes according to demand, local routes with fewer fixed business travelers are particularly vulnerable. The person in charge of the Aviation Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of International Affairs said that “there is no way to do it under the current situation”.

In addition, the Busan City Government announced on 28 July 2019 that it will suspend administrative exchanges with Japan until the worsening relationship between Japan and South Korea is improved. Official visits to Japan will also be restricted.

According to a Reuters report on 29 July 2019, a Korean Air spokesperson said that the company will suspend flights between Busan and Sapporo as a result of the decline in demand due to diplomatic disputes between Japan and South Korea.

The spokesperson said Korean Air is also considering reducing the number of flights between the two countries in mid-August 2019 or switching to smaller aircraft.
