Drukair Royal Bhutan Airlines in its latest press release dated 21 May 2019 indicates that its key investment in 2019 includes pre-delivery payments for its acquisition of two new aircraft, namely its first ATR 42-600 turboprop aircraft and its first Airbus A320neo jet.
According to delivery schedule, Drukair expects to receive the ATR 42-600 later in July 2019. The A320neo will be delivered to Drukair in 2020, a one year delay.
The ATR 42-600 aircraft will be deployed on domestic routes and short-haul routes to Bagdogra, Dhaka while the A320neo jet will operate flights on routes with higher passenger demand such as Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Singapore and future scheduled flights to Hong Kong and Dubai.
Currently, Drukair's fleet consists of 3 Airbus A319-100 jets and 1 ATR 42-500 turboprop. The turboprop is utilized on domestic routes to Bhutan destinations Bumthang, Gelephu and Yongphula from Paro while the A319 operates international scheduled flights from Paro to destinations such as Guwahati, Singapore, Suvarnabhumi, Kolkata, Delhi, Kathmandu and Dhaka.
Drukair in its press release further reveals that for the first time in its history, an A319 performed an All Women Flight on 8 March 2019 to celebrate International Women's Day. It received international media attention and generated much goodwill to Bhutan.
In 2018, Drukair operated 5271 flights, 368 flights more than the year before, an increase of 7.51 per cent. 792 domestic flights including additional and charter flights were operated in 2018. On-time performance for its scheduled flights is 99 per cent. Drukair is definitely the most punctual airline of the world.
Drukair carried 285,397 passengers in 2018, marking an increase of 5.31 per cent compared to 2017.
