Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport of China has achieved continental air hub status. It now has 102 international air routes, 184 domestic air routes, and 18 domestic-international transfer air routes. Airlines that have started to engage in domestic-international flight transfer operations in this airport include Hainan Airlines and Kunming-headquartered Lucky Air.

On 26 October 2017, Hainan Airlines launches Chengdu's longest route to New York Newark International Airport, the airport's second long-haul route after Hainan Airlines' Chengdu-Los Angeles route. With this flight, passengers from Sichuan Province and southwest China no longer need to transfer to America-bound flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou and Hong Kong.

In November 2017, Lucky Air plans to launch non-stop flight to St Petersburg in Russia from Chengdu and in January 2018, it plans to launch flight to Helsinki from Kunming via Chengdu using the Airbus A330-300 jet. With this flight, passengers from Sichuan Province and southwest China no longer need to transfer to Finnair's commercial flights to Helsinki from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

To meet the rising demand for continental air travel through Chengdu, the new Tianfu International Airport in Jianyang, under jurisdiction of Chengdu, is under construction to share with the growing air traffic of Shuangliu International Airport in 2020.

Construction of Tianfu International Airport begins on 17 May 2017 at 10 am and is due to complete in 2019 for operations to augur in 2020.

When construction completes, Tianfu International Airport with an area of 330,000 square metres will comprise of Terminal 1 (600,000 square metres), Terminal 2 (270,000 square metres) catering to domestic and international flight passengers and the Ground Transport Complex (80,000 square metres).

Tianfu International Airport is located 51 km southeast of the city centre of Chengdu. The new airport will be connected by Chengdu Metro Line 19 to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and by Chengdu Metro Line 18 to Chengdu South Railway Station in 2020 when it opens for air traffic operations. By then, Chengdu will have two operational international airports.
