According to Aviation Herald, an airborne Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-700 flight ET363, registered ET-ALN, encountered a large swarm of locusts on the way from Djibouti to Dire Dawa on 12 January 2020. The locusts hit the aircraft's engine, windshield and nose. The ET363 crew reluctantly landed in Addis Ababa.

The aircraft ET-ALN was cleaned and thoroughly inspected for about 11.5 hours after landing, but fortunately no damage was found.

Affected passengers were transferred to a relief flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported on 6 January 2020, "The desert locust situation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea is still very serious and it threatens pastures and crops in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. In eastern Ethiopia and adjacent areas of northern Somalia, a large number of bee colonies have formed. Some immature large locust swarms have moved south in the vicinity of Ogaden in eastern Ethiopia and central Somalia and have moved to southern Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya.
