Ethiopian Airlines will help Chinese tourists apply tourist entry visas to 35 African countries.

The President of Africa's largest airline, Tverde Gabriel Mariam, told reporters that from 2019, Ethiopian Airlines will set up an African Visa Centre in Addis Ababa to help Chinese tourists apply for entry visas to 35 African countries.

Ethiopian Airlines' move is intended to reduce the number of applications, especially for Chinese citizens who must travel to the African embassies in the capital of Ethiopia. Chinese passport holders can apply for a visa on arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

"The visa program will facilitate Chinese air travel and reduce their economic costs," said Tverde.

As the main airline in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines has begun to implement the Pan-African policy in recent years, opened more routes, revitalized the national airlines, and established more aviation hubs in Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines attributes its passenger traffic growth to the launches of freight and passenger routes to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In order to take advantage of the growing number of outbound tourists from China and Hong Kong, the airline began accepting payment methods such as Alipay in September 2018.

The establishment of a visa centre may also be a tactical game for Ethiopian Airlines, as it aims to ease intercontinental traffic to the African continent since more African countries have relaxed their visa policies to attract trade and tourists. In November 2018, Ethiopia began to implement a visa-based visa program for all tourists to Africa. The plan is particularly beneficial for Ethiopia because its aviation centre in Addis Ababa has now replaced Dubai as the gateway to Africa.

The report believes that the Visa Center to be set up by Ethiopian Airlines also symbolizes the continuous deepening of  ties between China and Ethiopia and strengthening of China's status position in Africa. In addition to work and trade, Chinese tourists are also increasingly interested in the historical and cultural attractions of Africa. Recognizing this, countries such as Kenya, Morocco and Tunisia have relaxed visa regulations or opened up marketing campaigns to encourage and attract more Chinese tourists. South Africa has even gone one step further and issued visas to Chinese tourists for multiple-entry visas from five to ten years.
