ATR uses sustainable aviation fuel in the delivery of Hokkaido Air System's aircraft

The ATR 42-600 with oneworld markings will further strengthen the Japan Airlines' branch network

An ATR42-600 with the oneworld alliance markings was officially delivered to Hokkaido Air Systems Co., Ltd. (HAC), a domestic subsidiary of Japan Airlines. It departed from Toulouse to Japan. The first segment of the flight uses sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Because it can take off and land on shorter runways, ATR aircraft has achieved great success in establishing inter-city routes in the Japanese archipelago. This ATR42-600 is the third ATR-600 received by HAC since its first delivery in December 2019, and it is also the 14th ATR-600 operated in Japan.

There is another reason for the great success of ATR in Japan: Japan has been working hard to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, so fuel-efficient ATR models are very popular. Compared with regional jets of the same level, ATR aircraft fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 40%.

Emissions can be further saved by using SAF fuel. ATR recently announced a project to fly with 100% SAF fuel: a demonstration flight is planned for the spring of 2022. The goal is that by 2025, ATR may run 100% SAF on aviation fuel of commercial flights.
