Flight Operations Review : Starlux Airlines

Review by : Gan Yung Chyan
                  / KUCINTA SETIA

Images below : The Inaugural Flight advertisements exhibited by Starlux Macau Airport Office.

Image below : Starlux staff preparing to open the check-in counters at Macau Airport.

23 January 2020 is the official inaugural flight operations day of Starlux Airlines. The airline's overseas stations including Macau were indeed busy in ensuring the smooth operations of the check-in counters, ensuring passengers board their respective flights, got their inaugural flight certificates and organizing the inaugural flight ceremonies.

Check-in counters are divided into Business, Economy, Self-check-in Baggage Drop / Disabled Passengers. Business Class passengers and Cosmile Explorer and Insighter passengers queue at the Business Class counter.

The reporter of Sayacinta -  Airpost tested the Macau station's response to the reporter's outgoing flight to Singapore from Danang with two Starlux tickets on the Macau (MFM) - Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) and TPE - Danang (DAD) routes.

Starlux's staff in Taoyuan and Macau were tested if they could arrange free passenger transfer from the MFM - TPE to the TPE - DAD routes without clearing Immigration.

Initially, the reporter was informed that Starlux Airlines is a point-to-point passenger service carrier that does not organize passenger transfer to another route. However, due to the Lunar New Year traffic boom and the longest immigration queue in Taoyuan from 12.30 pm to 3 pm starting from 23 January to 29 January, the Macau station staff took the initiative to request the passenger to show the two tickets to them at the Business counter before agreeing to transfer the checked-in luggage all the way from MFM to DAD via TPE based on the first booking reference, in this case, RPUPYB.

The reporter does not need to clear the Immigration in Taoyuan and re-check-in the luggage. Just take along the two boarding passes with the common Booking Reference based on the first booking and proceed to Gate A6 in Taoyuan to wait for the outbound Danang flight JX1701, the second Danang flight of the inaugural flight operations day.

Kudos to Starlux Airlines for ensuring the passenger transfer smoothly and for being flexible!

Flight Reviews

The inaugural flights from MFM to TPE and TPE to DAD were delayed. Flight JX201 arrives in MFM from TPE at 9.41 am, a delay of 16 minutes for the traditional water canon salute while boarding JX1701 commences at 3.20 pm and the flight takes off for Danang at 3.40 pm while JX202 arrives in TPE at 12.30 pm.

The crew on both flights appear professional and cheerful. There are differences though. On the flights to Macau, passengers do not see blankets on the seats whereas on the Danang flights, the crew allow the passengers to choose whether to use the blankets. Small pillows are compulsory on all Starlux flights.

Image below : On the Macau flight.

Image below : On the Danang flight.

Image below : The Macau air hostess of JX201 / JX202.

The crew presented passengers with their be-shopping items after the flights take off.

Image below : The Danang crew at Gate A6.

The most impressive crew appear to be on the Danang sector. Third-quarter of the inaugural journey to Danang is in turbulent weather. The crew manage to serve the passengers with food and drinks without withdrawal.

If a passenger has a specific request, the air hostess does her best to fulfill the demand. For example, a passenger requests for a perfect hardcopy of Kiann, the Starlux Airlines official inflight magazine, without any sign of damage and crease. The air hostess finally granted the passenger's wish after changing the magazine twice.

The Danang route air hostess and Macau station staff response show the attitude expected by Starlux CEO Zhang Guowei on his staff, meaning going out all the way to ensure passengers' expectations are met satisfactorily.

Inflight safety procedures are followed strictly and adequately.

Indeed, the reporter is pleased with the on-ground and inflight performance of Starlux Airlines' staff although the aisle of the A321neo aircraft is narrower than that of the A320 and the inflight entertainment, USB portal etc appear not necessary for a short-haul flight since the usage cost does not match the prices of the Starlux tickets.

The cheapest fare on the MFM - TPE route, the Saving Fare, may start from 250 Singapore Dollars, subject to availability.

Inflight food service is perfect. Food is not oily. It is nutritious.

The inflight menu items however suggest why the ticket prices are extremely high. The inflight food from Taipei is prepared reputedly by Michelin-star chefs. These include Roasted Honey Chicken with Penne in Garlic Oil on the Danang route, vegetarian meals on the Macau route and Beef Rendang Minang Turmeric Rice on the Penang route.

There are no aircraft postcards onboard Starlux Airlines' flights. Passengers are given blank folder cards. If these are insufficient, write on Starlux's barf bags.

All passengers on the inaugural flights were given inaugural flight certificates during boarding and Starlux mugs upon arrival at their destinations.

There is room for service improvement at Starlux Airlines. Happy Lunar New Year 2020!
