Makeover? Korean Air, which acquired Asiana, registers new logo

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

According to Korean media reports, Korean Air, which is in the process of acquiring and merging with Asiana Airlines, recently applied to the Korean Intellectual Property Office for a trademark registration for the new design of the company's trademark.

Korean Air has used the existing logo since 1984.

Korean Air said that this is one of various attempts to strengthen the brand. An official from Korean Air explained, "In order to improve and strengthen the brand, various attempts are being made internally, but this is an undetermined matter."

The industry believes that changes may occur because the merger of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines has not yet been completed.

Korean Air, which signed an agreement to acquire a 63.88% stake in Asiana Airlines in November 2020, has been under investigation by South Korea's antitrust enforcement agency "Fair Trade Commission". It is said that a plenary meeting will be held in the near future to review the acquisition. However, even if the Justice Committee finally decides to approve Korean Air's acquisition of Asiana Airlines, whether the two companies can merge depends on the results of the deliberation of the anti-monopoly law enforcement agencies of seven overseas countries.

Korean Air's acquisition of Asiana Airlines is under review in the U.S., EU, China, Japan, UK, Singapore and Australia. The acquisition has been approved in Malaysia and Thailand.
