Airline : China Airlines.
Routes under Review : Hong Kong - Taoyuan - Hong Kong
Departure Dates : 15 to 16 June 2017
Aircraft Operation Service : ***
China Airlines tends to re-deploy aircraft on the route. For example, the 5.35 pm flight to Taoyuan from Hong Kong was supposed to be served by an Airbus A350 XWB jet. However, due to bad weather condition (how true it is I do not know), an Airbus A330-300 was deployed to bring us to Taoyuan at 7 pm instead. There was no email notification on the flight timing and aircraft deployment changes.
Inflight Service : ***
Inflight service is insufficient although each passenger can collect a free printed copy of China Airlines Inflight Magazine Dynasty but the inflght seat copies are not in better condition than the office copies. Blankets for passengers are insufficient. The aircraft crew cannot control the temperature of the cabin. It is too cool for many passengers. There is no aircraft postcard including the A350 XWB postcards onboard the Hong Kong flights. One of the stewards gave me a pack of gamecards as compensation but I rejected the unwanted gift. The pro is that one may get a Premium Economy Class seat upon counter check-in after upgrading.
Ground Service in response to passengers' requests and enquiries : *****
Timetables, holiday packages and inflight magazines are provided at ticketing offices free-of-charge for customers to plan their Taiwan travel itineraries. This is five-star service and this factor enabled me to give an attempt in booking this airline.
Ticketing : **
However, I discovered that online ticketing and booking on China Airlines' flights has its perils. One cannot the amend flight date after payment has been made unless the customer calls the destination's branch office to request for online amendment. For example, if you want to amend flight departure date from Hong Kong to Taoyuan, on-line, you need to call the Hong Kong office, not the Singapore office of China Airlines, for the amendment. China Airlines web-site has no control over the tickets issued. This may lead to overbooking problem. If possible, customer has to re-book after cancelling the flight. China Airlines' web-site is one of the worst full-service airline web-sites to use.
Overall Impression : I will not recommend booking again and flying with China Airlines unless it is necessary to do so and if you like the friendly service of the crew and ticketing staff. Tigerair Taiwan is better than China Airlines in terms of booking amendment and flight punctuality. China Airlines needs to improve ticketing, inflight service and flight operation quality to catch up with Tigerair Taiwan and Eva Air to attain five-star quality. Overall, China Airlines is a three-star airline.
** Poor / two-star
*** Good / three-star
***** Very good / five-star
****** Excellent / six-star (the highest category)
