Tigerair Australia suspends operations while Virgin Australia survives

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

According to foreign media, Tigerair Australia, initially started as a joint-venture between Tigerair and Virgin Australia, has suspended domestic operations because there is no demand for its services during the pandemic. Its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) has however been retained by Virgin Australia. In the future it may resume operations as an ultra-low-cost airline subsidiary of Virgin Australia.

Meanwhile, Virgin Australia, which fell into voluntary administration, has been bought out by US private equity group Bain Capital and the buyover deal is expected to be officially approved by the end of August 2020.

The careers of Virgin Australia's thousands of employees have been retained under the new management agreement and the airline is operating domestic flight services as well as on routes previously operated by Tigerair Australia. The airline is no longer operating scheduled international flights.
