The Royal Government of Bhutan has declared 2015 as “Visit Bhutan 2015” year to commemorate the 60th birthday anniversary of His Majesty the 4th Druk Gyalpo. The tourism industry will celebrate the year under the tagline “Celebrate happiness”.

Visit Bhutan 2015 serves as one of the largest Tourism carnivals in Bhutan tourism history. Bhutan will celebrate 2015 with colourful festivals, events and activities held in different parts of Bhutan throughout the year. This programme invites all the tourists to experience authentic celebrations of various events.

Bhutan’s tourism sector is regarded as one of the most exclusive travel destinations in the world. Bhutan is often revered as the "land of the Thunder Dragon" as still regarded as the last "Shangri-la" in the Himalayan region because of its remoteness, its spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna and its unique ancient Buddhist monasteries, deeply revered king, remarkably friendly people and unique colourful culture.

The Royal Government of Bhutan adheres strongly to a policy of high value, low impact/volume tourism which serves the purpose of creating an image of exclusivity and high-yield for Bhutan. Here Buddhism is a natural way of life and the whole country breathes peace, tranquility, enchantment, joy and age-old wisdom.

Bhutan has introduced Gross National Happiness to the world as an alternative for the economic Gross National Product, thereby inspiring many other countries to look at happiness and development in a different, richer way.

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan

ITB Asia 2014 opens

The first of a three-year run in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, the seventh edition of ITB Asia opens on 29 October 2014 at Sands Expo & Convention Centreand ends on 31 October 2014. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 am at Basement 2 is officiated by Mr S Iswaran, Minister in Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs & Trade & Industry, Dr. Christian Goke, CEO of Messe Berlin and David Scowsill, President & CEO, World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC).

As the biggest and greenest travel trade show in the region, ITB Asia 2014 witnesses many firsts.

ITB Asia stresses on sustainability

Firstly, the integrated resort’s team of sustainability experts at Marina Bay Sands have guided ITB Asia 2014 in reducing its carbon footprint by five per cent from 399 tonnes in 2012 when ITB Asia held its fifth edition of the travel show at Sands Expo & Convention Centre. This is achieved through a range of measures such as choosing food items sourced regionally for the Harvest Menu, utilizing newly activated in-room motion sensors to ensure maximum lighting efficiency in the meeting rooms and setting a room temperature of 24 degrees.

Consequently, the total carbon footprint produced during the three-day event is being offset entirely. The carbon credits will in turn be invested in two regional climate change mitigation projects, Sungai Kerling Hydropower in Malaysia and Wayang Windu Geothermal in Indonesia through the integrated resort’s partner Carbon Story.

Secondly, all unused booth giveaways and stationery such as note pads and pens are collected from the exhibitors at the end of ITB Asia by Marina Bay Sands. They will be donated to the integrated resort’s charity partner Food from the Heart. Leftover brochures at the booths will also be collected and recycled. The nature of such a donation and recycling drive is a first for ITB Asia, as well as Marina Bay Sands, an ISO 20121 certified venue host.

More buyers and exhibitors from more countries

Thirdly, ITB Asia 2014 has seen strong support from the business travel segment and an increase in international representation with more than 700 exhibitors from 76 countries and regions.

Global business travel spend is expected to reach a record US$1.18 trillion by 2014, with nearly 40% coming from Asia Pacific. This is according to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), which released latest figures from its Business Travel Index (BTI) outlook report at ITB Asia 2014, ‘the Trade Show for the Asian Travel Market’.

“The evolution of the business travel sector in Asia Pacific is leading key industry players from across the world to focus more intensely on this market. At ITB Asia, we hope to leverage this strong growth and maintain our position as the region’s main marketplace for business travel opportunities,” said Christian Göke, CEO Messe Berlin, organiser of ITB Asia.

“The MICE sector in particular is growing exceptionally, accounting for over half of the total business travel market. It is a very resilient segment that is outpacing traditional corporate travel. ITB Asia aims to deliver pertinent insights on these key industry opportunities to help delegates leverage the potential,” added Göke.

“The dramatic progress of Asia’s travel and tourism markets, fuelled by the rising BRIC economies, testifies once again to the region’s immense potential for growth. Now, more so than ever, we need to encourage greater strategic collaboration among the leaders of the industry. Over the years, ITB Asia has been incredibly valuable in delivering comprehensive market insights and important networking opportunities. We are confident that STB’s partnership with Messe Berlin will continue to boost the success of ITB Asia and anchor TravelRave’s status as the region’s premier travel and tourism week for the trade” said Neeta Lachmandas, Assistant Chief Executive, Singapore Tourism Board.

GBTA’s BTI study also forecasts China to overtake the US as the world’s number one business travel market by 2016 and other Asia Pacific countries such as India and Indonesia to grow between 11-14% annually over the next five years.

“In Asia Pacific, there are a number of countries showing high growth in terms of business travel spend. These markets include Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We forecast an average growth rate of 7.5-10% annually in these markets,” said Welf Ebeling, GBTA Vice President, Operations, Asia.

“The second fastest growth market in Asia is India which equally to China showed a 16% growth in the first decade of this century. Over the last 15 years, India has worked its way up the rankings of major global business travel markets from number 24 in 2000 to the world’s 10th ranked market in 2013. GBTA expects India to become the ninth largest business travel market within the next five years,” he added.

Golden Myanmar Airlines resumes flights to Bangkok and code-shares with Tigerair from 26 October 2014

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan

Distributed to All Press & Travel Professionals

Golden Myanmar Airlines is resuming daily scheduled flights from Yangon to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and beginning code-sharing flights with Tigerair on its Singapore route from 26 October 2014, according to its advertisement releases on its Facebook page.

From 26 October 2014, Golden Myanmar Airlines flight Y5 237 departs from Yangon for Suvarnabhumi at 7 pm and arrives in Suvarnabhumi at 8.50 pm before leaving Suvarnabhumi at 9.30 pm and touching down in Yangon at 10.20 pm local time under Y5 238. Flights are operated by one of its Airbus A320 aircraft.

On the same day, Golden Myanmar Airlines begins its flight from Singapore for Yangon at 7.20 am and arrives in Yangon at 8.50 am under flight Y5 2234 in a code-sharing arrangement with Tigerair from Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2. It departs from Yangon at 9.45 am and returns to Terminal 2 at 2.15 pm under Y5 2233.

For Golden Myanmar Airlines, the new schedules imply that 25 October is the final last date of  the Yangon airline's Airbus A320 flight to Singapore. There is no longer an afternoon flight of the carrier on the Singapore - Yangon route from 26 October.

For Tigerair, it is significant as it does not need to suspend flights to Yangon. Sharing its seats with Golden Myanmar Airlines means both airlines can share profits on the route.

The new Singapore-Yangon flight schedule of Golden Myanmar Airlines connects to its Yangon - Mandalay ATR 72-600 route which ensures passengers leave Yangon at 3.20 pm and arrive in Mandalay at 4.30 pm on the same day, and not after 7.30 pm. However, passengers departing from Mandalay for Singapore with Golden Myanmar Airlines will have to stay overnight in Yangon.

Golden Myanmar Airlines has a fleet of 2 Airbus A320 and 2 ATR 72-600 aircraft and faces competition from SilkAir on the Singapore-Yangon-Mandalay route. Readers interested to gather more information on the Yangon low-cost airline's services may check its web-site at www.gmairlines.com.

Low-cost airline Link PNG commences operations on 1 November 2014 as Air Niugini restructures

Air Niugini's low-cost airline subsidiary named Link PNG commences operations on 1 November 2014 to coincide with Air Niugini’s 41 years of operation. Air Niugini began operations on 1 November 1973.

Air Niugini’s Board Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, made the announcement during a meeting between the airline management and the union in Port Moresby on 15 October 2014.

He said the establishment of a low-cost airline is part of Air Niugini’s restructure into the future and will open a new era in domestic air travel for Papua New Guineans.

Sir Fred said Link PNG's low-cost model aims to provide reliable and safe flight services within Papua New Guinea. The carrier will also serve PNG routes on a community service (CSO) obligation, ensuring that not only are remote and less profitable services maintained, but progressively expanded to meet the growing transport needs of Papua New Guinea.

He said “Link PNG will be a smarter, less “frills” and low cost carrier that will principally service routes to provincial and district centres which are currently being operated by the Dash 8 Classic fleet”.

“Its establishment will ensure that rather than air services being reduced by the ownership restructure of Air Niugini Limited and the injection of private sector capital – as has occurred in other countries in the region – they will actually be guaranteed and increased.”

The most important aspect of the establishment of Link PNG is that it will guarantee regular, reliable, safe and affordable services to the more remote parts of the nations where patronage is less than the main domestic routes, but just as important for the travelling public.

Link PNG will commence operations as a separate company on 1 November 2014 under its own Board and Management. Mr Daniel Wanma is the Chief Executive Officer. His senior management team has been selected and they have all satisfied the PNG Civil Aviation Safety Authority (PNGCASA) requirements as “fit and proper” persons – a mandatory regulatory requirement. Link PNG will operate from its own premises located alongside the Cargo premises.

All these personnel, including the technical crew and other employees, will be seconded as Air Niugini employees on an agreed arrangement to work under Link PNG initially under probation until their permanent positions in Link PNG are confirmed.

Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Mr Simon Foo said Air Niugini has been operating and running its business the way it has been for the last 40 years with little change when business practices and circumstances, economic climate and technology have changed dramatically in the regional and worldwide airline industry.

“ This move is gearing Air Niugini to engaging in smarter business practices in the delivery of its services, and in a cost effective manner. It is imperative that Air Niugini embraces new and modern ways and means of delivering its services. ”Mr Foo said.

Cost-effective service is true for Air Niugini as it is manifested in the national flag carrier's most recent officially endorsed e-ticketing agreement with Qatar Airways. Under the agreement, passengers can connect to Qatar Airways' destinations in the Middle East and Africa by purchasing Air Niugini e-tickets for travel with Qatar Airways via Air Niugini's hubs Singapore and Hong Kong to Doha.

Air Niugini's latest news is certainly bringing excellent tidings to ITB Asia 2014 exhibitor Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority and tourists to Papua New Guinea.
