VietJet Air took delivery of its first Airbus A321 aircraft, the 9,000th aircraft manufactured by Airbus, in Ho Chi Minh City at 2:30 pm on 22 March 2015. Coded VN-A65, VietJet’s first A321 aircraft is its fifth aircraft from a purchase order of 100 aircraft produced by Airbus.

The new aircraft, which was purchased in a deal financed by BNP Paribas bank (France) and Jackson Square (Japan), has been emblazoned with the words “Airbus' 9,000th aircraft”.

Earlier the aircraft delivery ceremony was celebrated in Hamburg (Germany) with the attendance of the Vice President of Airbus, Nico Petersen and the Vietnam Ambassador to Germany, Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh.

The A320 single-aisle jetliner family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A321 aircraft features Sharklets wingtip devices. The widest passenger cabin in its class, the A321 also boasts extended service intervals for the air-frame and the stretched-fuselage can seat up to 220 passengers in a high-density arrangement.

Airbus has brought the benefits of increased maximum seating capacities to all A321 designs with further optimized cabin space and increased exit limits while retaining the company’s modern, comfort standards.

This newly arrived A321 jet will take VietJet Air’s fleet up to a total of 23 aircraft, facilitating the airline’s expansion plans, which include opening longer haul routes to South Korea, Japan, and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region.

“We are very proud to welcome a new A321 to our family in line with our expansion plans in Asia Pacific. We believe that the new fleet will further facilitate our business plan as well as offer customers more and more wonderful flying experiences. Once again, we are delighted to welcome the 9,000th aircraft of Airbus into our enthusiastic family.” said Luu Duc Khanh, managing director of VietJet Air.

John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer of Airbus, also shared his delight at the handover: “It is a great honour for us to deliver the 9,000th aircraft to VietJet – a rising star among airlines in Asia. The new A321 will boost VietJet’s operation to a new level in terms of cost efficiency for single-aisle aircraft.”

Receiving its first A321 is a significant milestone on VietJet Air’s strategic business plan after three years of operations. Vietjet has fast become one of the most popular airlines in Vietnam and is now enjoying introducing its services to multiple markets across Southeast Asia and further afield in Asia.

By adding more brand new, modern aircraft, VietJet will improve its cost efficiency, and as a result be able to offer even better air fares to customers while expanding its flight network and contributing to the development of the aviation industry in Vietnam and in the region.

In a surprise move, local travel agency Jetspeed Travel Pte Ltd has taken over Air India Express and Air India's sales, ticketing and airport office operations in Singapore, becoming the first travel agent in Singapore to manage a major airline's assets in the Singapore airport and downtown. Therefore, Air India's local branch office at The Gateway in Beach Road is closed after its last day of business on 21 March 2015.

Air India appointed Jetspeed Travel Pte Ltd as its Singapore General Sales Agent while Air India Express appointed the travel agency as its Representative in November 2014. Both airlines have slashed online fares on its routes to Singapore from Chennai, Tiruchirapally, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai recently. This has boost ticketing business at the Beach Road office and the GSA and made travelling to India from Singapore more affordable than booking return flights with Tigerair to India.

For example, one-way April fare of Air India Express including taxes all-in to Chennai via Tiruchirapalli starts from 183 Singapore Dollars. A direct Dreamliner flight of Air India from Chennai starts from 289 Singapore Dollars.

Air India staff and the GSA staff will officially run sales and ticketing operations together at the bigger premises of Jetspeed Travel Pte Ltd located at 1 Coleman Street, #03-07/08 Peninsula Shopping Complex, Singapore 179804, from 23 March 2015 as well as Air India and Air India Express airport office at Terminal 2 of Changi Airport.

Jetspeed Travel Pte Ltd is the former GSA of Nepal Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines in Singapore.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines mulls new flights to new cities, new aircraft

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan
                  / KUCINTA SETIA
Distributed to All Press & Travel Professionals

In an inhouse interview with MIAT Mongolian Airlines Inflight Magazine which Sayacinta - Airpost managed to receive a hardcopy from Ulaanbaatar during the week of ITB Berlin 2015, N. Ganbold, the Vice President of MIAT Mongolian Airlines revealed that the airline plans to launch summer flights to new cities and add new aircraft types.

By June 2015, MIAT Mongolian Airlines will conduct summer flights from Ulaanbaatar to Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg in Siberia, besides operating all-year round regular flights to Moscow, Berlin, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda and Hong Kong.  Now Mongolia is embracing for higher influxes of passengers from Russia and countries affliated to the European Union since they do not require any entry visa to visit the country.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines is mulling temporary flights from Ulaanbaatar to Hovd.

Direct flights to Frankfurt will resume in summer while flights to Singapore which have been suspended after 4 March 2015 may be operated on a seasonal intermittent basis subject to operation requirements and commercial market demand.

Commenting on its scheduled flights to Singapore via Beijing, Ganbold said the airline aims to capture a travel market of travellers from the US and Asia that transit in Singapore. However the current Chinggis Khaan International Airport of Ulaanbaatar has small capacity and cannot handle continuous influxes of passengers from Southeast Asia without controlling fuel prices. He said Ulaanbaatar can only be a hub airport once the new bigger international airport in Khishigtlin Khundii has completed construction which will likely attract new competitors and lower fuel prices for aircraft landings in Ulaanbaatar.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines' competitor Hunnu Air recently ceased international flights to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Suvarnabhumi, Tokyo and Paris. These cancellations have spiked fuel prices for aircraft landings in Ulaanbaatar despite the fall in international fuel prices.

Ganbold admits that the national flag carrier is operating flights to Singapore at a loss but he admits some new destinations like Singapore and Frankfurt take years to develop new travel markets and to have more passengers.

Ganbold said MIAT Mongolian Airlines  is conducting feasibility studies to operate scheduled flights to Busan, Suvarnabhumi, London and New York in the medium term and long run.

Meanwhile, MIAT Mongolian Airlines which received its leased Boeing B737-800 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation in May 2014 has deferred purchases of two  B737-800NG aircraft from 2016 to 2019-2020. These two aircraft may be substituted with the B737MAX aircraft.

On operating long distance flights to destinations such as Frankfurt, Singapore, London and New York, MIAT Mongolian Airlines is discussing with Boeing on inducting a Dreamliner aircraft to its fleet within three to four years.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines is officially conferred National Flag Carrier status in 2013 according to Mongolia's State policy for civil air transportation. It distributes new aircraft postcards of its current fleet which comprises of B767-300ER and B737-800 jets and its company profile at ITB Berlin 2015. It aims to upgrade its customer satisfaction level to Skytrax 4 star Airline ranking this year.
